Keto Salts - Beware of the Scams
I am still living the keto life. If you don't know what keto is, I will explain. Keto is short for ketosis. When you are in ketosis, the body converts fat to ketones to be used for energy. In this scenario, ketones are produced endogenously, meaning inside the body. Keto salts (exogenous ketones), are synthesized in a lab and consumed as a supplement. Exogenous means growing or originating from outside an organism. This is essentially giving your body extra, easy to use energy.
If you do keto then I am sure you have heard of the keto salts. I started them yesterday, well last night so today will be a full day taking them. I like to keep my blogs short but I am going to do the best I can explaining the salts so you can understand more.
Keto salts or BHB (beta-hydroxybutyrate) are naturally-derived compounds that simply mix sodium (and/or potassium, or calcium) with BHB to improve absorption. These are also sometimes called “Ketone Mineral Salts” or “BHB Mineral Salts.
Exogenous ketones (BHB) are probably the most controversial ketogenic supplement and have been getting more attention in the media as I am sure you know someone "selling" these. There is so much information out there and it might confuse you and you don't know which one to trust. On one side you have people you know that love and use exogenous ketones and they talk about it and try and sell you it and on the other side you have me that will keep it real and tell you that most are scams or are just expensive pee.
First, lets be clear, there is no magic drink that is going to help you lose weight. Nothing in a bottle is going to help you fix your poor nutrition habits or your lifestyle choices. If someone is trying to sell you these products, they will not tell you that. Also, your body will produce ketones itself naturally when you follow the keto diet the right way and guess what? It is free. Look at it this way, there is a difference between being in true nutritional ketosis and ketonemia (the presence of ketone bodies in the blood). Taking exogenous ketones promotes ketonaemia, not nutritional ketosis. So if you take BHB or one of those expensive drinks, then it will put ketones in your blood temporarily. That is why when you take those drinks and pee on a stick, it shows ketones in your urine.
So when people say “drink this stuff and you’ll be in ketosis”, what they really say is that after you drink exogenous ketones and measure your blood ketone level after an hour or so, you will see the presence of ketones. However, it doesn’t guarantee that you are in nutritional ketosis and will stay there. Why? Because your ketone levels will return to your baseline, whether that be in ketosis (from eating a ketogenic diet) or not in ketosis (if you eat too much carbs). Ketosis can only be done by following a true keto diet. The best thing you can do for your body to get and stay in ketosis is to eat real keto foods and follow the ketogenic diet well.
I purchased BHB because BHB is most beneficial if you follow the keto diet (and I follow the diet). But if you’re cheating on keto, BHB won’t really do much. So if you’re eating high-carb foods every day and you’re made to believe that EK will help you stay in nutritional ketosis, you’ll be very disappointed. It might be wiser to spend your money on bacon and avocados instead of EK. EK is not a magic pill. You cannot use it to erase eating choices. Stay away from the marketers who try to tell you that "you can have your cake and eat it too" or "just eat all the carbs that you love, and then just use our product and you're good to go". This is not true!
I have been doing it for three weeks now and never hit the "keto flu". I had one migraine when I was in Austin but ate a donut (keeping it real) and it went away. I woke up the next day and started the keto diet again and have felt fine since.
So back to my topic. To keep it short and simple, I purchased BHB to boost my energy and increase satiety. Exogenous ketones are NOT a carb blocker or a guilt eraser after you cheat on your keto diet. It is not a weight loss supplement that leads to magical weight loss either. You can't drink alcohol every day or eat like crap every day and expect Keto to work for you. Everything I researched said follow the keto diet first, get your body in a true state of ketosis and then you can supplement with BHB while still following your diet and you are on the road to success.
I started BHB that arrived yesterday from Amazon for only $49. It has way more per serving than any other gimmick on the market. Nutricost makes it and its just pure BHB. You don't have any fillers in it or anything. I will post a link below. Most products trying to sell you BHB with aminos have around 6g BHB per serving, this has almost 17g BHB per serving.
These are the reasons I am going to add it into my keto diet based on what I have been researching:
If the keto flu ever tries to come back, this is supposed to help.
Helps with hunger because I am in a calorie deficit because I am trying to lean out more.
Cognitive benefits. The brain uses up the vast majority of the energy our bodies produce. Although this energy is normally generated from glucose in the blood when glucose levels are reduced, ketones can provide 50-70% of this energy, and it’s a more efficient process
"Supports" in weight loss. It doesn't make you lose weight. It helps control hunger so you dont give into temptation, improve triglycerides, blood glucose, and insulin response, and even help directly with weight loss when a well-formulated way of eating is followed.
Performance booster. I mix BHB with Gaspari amino last and it will help get me through cardio and weights.I combine it with amino last because it has electrolytes in it. Since when we do keto, we tend to hold less water and need more electrolytes on a regular basis.
So bottom line is, eat right, follow the keto diet and supplement with pure BHB. Stay away from the gimmicks and the promises of these drinks do everything for you. The diet like everything else is number one so remember that.
